Dr Jonathan Penm (BPharm (Hons), PhD, GradCertEdStud (Higher Ed)) is a pharmacist researcher that has worked clinically at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Sydney/Sydney Eye Hospital and is currently working as a Lecturer at the University of Sydney School of Pharmacy.
Dr Penm has been involved in the implementation and evaluation of opioid stewardship programs at Prince of Wales Hospital, Redcliffe Hospital and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. Jonathan currently works closely with pain physicians, anesthetists, surgeons, addiction specialists and quality improvement pharmacists to conduct research that improves patient care. Jonathan has successfully published over 50 peer-reviewed publications.
Dr Penm’s interest in pain management started when he was a surgery clinical pharmacist and worked closely with surgeons and anesthetists. His interest led him to the USA where he completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the College of Pharmacy, University of Cincinnati in Ohio, USA. During his fellowship, Jonathan focused on improving the use of opioids through guideline implementation and state-level prescription drug monitoring programs in both the community and hospital setting. Jonathan’s international experience has also led him to be a member of the Executive Committee of the Hospital Pharmacy Section of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), which represents over 4 million pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists around the world.
